When Real Life Accidents Happen In The World Of Professional Wrestling

Hardcore Holly’s Broken Neck

Bob Holly came to the WWF in 1994 and after a few years, he found his niche as Hardcore Holly. He’d often wrestle in Hardcore matches, which were anything goes, no disqualification matches. He even won the Hardcore Title on 6 different occasions.

In 2002, he was wrestling on Smackdown and starting to get a main event push. He was wrestling a then rookie Brock Lesnar. During the match, Lesnar attempted to give Holly a powerbomb, which has injured many wrestlers over the years. Unfortunately, during the move, Lesnar accidentally dropped Holly on his head, which ruptured a disc in his neck.

Understandably, there had been talk over the years of dislike between them because of the accident, but Holly has publicly stated that he didn’t rotate enough on the move and Lesnar continued trying to do it. Holly has said it was an accident caused by inexperience.

Holly would recover and return to wrestling for the WWE until 2009.
