Changing her Tune, McCaskill Vows to Oppose Stupak Amendment

Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said the Stupak amendment would not be an obstacle to passage in the Senate:

“Obviously, I have been a pro-choice candidate for my entire political career, and obviously there is controversy always surrounding this issue. But we are talking about whether or not people that get public money can buy an insurance policy that has a coverage for abortion. And that is not the majority of America.”

Contrast that statement with this eloquent tweet which begins: “Oppose Stupak.” Not to pick on McCaskill, but this reversal is quick and dramatic enough to give you whiplash.

It seems clear that in the immediate aftermath of the House action this weekend, a lot of Democrats didn’t fully appreciate just how consequential and far-reaching the amendment could potentially be. Now, they’re scrambling to remedy the situation without losing the support of conservative Democrats they still need to pass the conference agreement.
