When top athletes compete against each other, you can almost always expect entertaining trash-talk. Taunting is nothing new under the sun. In fact, competitive taunts can be traced back to the first olympic games in Greece, thousands of years ago.
Taunting always gets the attentions of the fans — everyone wants to see how the opponent responds. Are they going to play more emotionally? Will they let it get in their head? Or, are they going to make the person who taunted them look silly, as revenge? Whether you’re for or against athletes taunting, you have to admit it that it makes the dynamics of a competition more entertaining to watch.
Look at all the trash-talk that has now become a part of combat sports. In order to sell PPV’s as a fighter, you’re going to need to say some things before the fight, or make a name for yourself by saying things during the fight. Take Conor McGregor’s pre-fight verbal onslaughts, for example. Love him or hate him, everyone tunes in to see what happens.
Taunts can be found in just about every form of competition — from the Olympic games, to boxing, hockey, etc. While taunts are often used strategically, to get in the head of the opposing athlete(s), nothing is more embarrassing than a trash-talking athlete that proceeds to get owned post-taunt.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at 10 of the most notable taunts gone wrong. To be clear, this list consists of athletes that were embarrassed after (or as a result of) their taunt. Only taunt blunders that had a major impact on the result of the were considered. Enjoy the video!
